To me the mantra OM is that acknowledgement of the connection between our body, mind and spirit, as well as the connection between ourselves, others and all things.
When we chant OM at the start of practice, the sound vibrates though the body helping us to feel the physical body and focus the mind. The exhalation is elongated beginning the process of calming the nervous system and bringing us into the state of peace and relaxation.
OM can be chanted ‘A-U-M’ or ‘O-M’ because in the Sanskrit language, where it originates, A and U can combine to be pronounced like and O.
One of the most potent parts of chanting OM is the space and silence the follows it, next time you chant OM, see what happens when you feel into that.
